The intestinal microbiome of the indri lemur, a critically endangered species native to Madagascar, has been analysed for the first time. This study reveals unique bacterial species and social transmission patterns. It offers new perspectives on conservation efforts.

Indri Lemur

Indri indri, also called babakoto locally, is an arboreal lemur found only in north-east Madagascar’s tropical forests.
It feeds on leaves, fruits, seeds, flowers, bark and occasionally soil.
The species lives in small, stable family groups of two to five members. These groups are monogamous and matriarchal.
Interaction between groups is minimal due to defined territorial boundaries.
The indri cannot survive in captivity. It is critically endangered, primarily due to habitat loss caused by climate change and human activities.

Methodology

Researchers analysed faecal and soil samples from six indri families. Using genome assembly techniques, they identified bacterial species in the indri’s intestinal microbiome. The findings were published in The ISME Journal.

Key Findings on Microbiome Composition

The research uncovered 48 bacterial species in the indri microbiome. Of these, 47 were previously unknown and unique to indris. Only Escherichia coli was a known species, mostly found in populations near human settlements. This suggests the indri host exclusive microbial communities. The extinction of indris would also mean the loss of these unique bacteria.

Social Transmission of Microbiome

The study found that microbiome bacteria are transmitted within social groups. Each family group shares unique bacterial strains not found in other groups. This transmission occurs despite indris ingesting soil, which does not contribute to their gut microbiome. Genetic differences in bacterial strains align with geographic separation between groups. This indicates isolated populations develop distinct microbial profiles.

Implications for Conservation

Understanding the indri’s microbiome adds a new dimension to conservation strategies. Protecting their habitat also preserves their unique microbial heritage. Microbiome analysis could serve as a tool to monitor population health and social structures. This knowledge may assist in preventing extinction and maintaining biodiversity in fragmented habitats.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently reclassified hepatitis D as a carcinogenic virus. This decision marks the urgent need to prevent viral hepatitis, which remains global health challenge. Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection, especially when combined with hepatitis B virus (HBV), greatly increases the risk of liver cancer and severe liver disease. This reclassification is expected to boost worldwide efforts in surveillance, research, and prevention.

Hepatitis Types

Hepatitis refers to liver inflammation caused by viruses, toxins, or autoimmune diseases. The five main viral types are A, B, C, D, and E.Hepatitis A spreads via faecal-oral route and causes acute infection. Vaccines are available.
Hepatitis B spreads through blood and bodily fluids and causes chronic infection. Vaccines exist.
Hepatitis C transmits mainly through blood exposure and has no vaccine.
Hepatitis D infects only those with hepatitis B and worsens outcomes.
Hepatitis E spreads through contaminated water and food; vaccines are limited

Hepatitis D and Its Cancerous Nature

Hepatitis D is a defective virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B virus to replicate. It cannot infect individuals alone. Co-infection or superinfection with HBV causes more severe liver damage. Studies show HDV increases liver cancer risk two to six times compared to HBV alone. Around 75% of HDV patients develop liver cirrhosis within 15 years. HDV intensifies the carcinogenic effect of hepatitis B, which itself can cause cancer by integrating into liver cell DNA.

Modes of Transmission

Hepatitis D spreads similarly to hepatitis B and C. Transmission occurs through blood and bodily fluids. This includes unsafe injections, blood transfusions, mother-to-child transmission, and unprotected sexual contact. High-risk groups include intravenous drug users and those with chronic hepatitis B. Preventive measures such as safe blood practices and barrier contraception are essential.

Diagnosis and Prevention

Diagnosis of hepatitis D involves blood tests detecting HDV RNA or antibodies. Since HDV depends on HBV, universal hepatitis B vaccination indirectly prevents hepatitis D infection. Despite inclusion in national immunisation programmes, hepatitis B vaccine coverage remains low in many regions. Safe injection practices, screening of blood products, and safe sex education are critical preventive strategies. Emerging antiviral treatments like bulevirtide offer hope for managing chronic HDV infection.

Hepatitis B Vaccination Schedules

Hepatitis B vaccine is given in multiple schedules depending on age and risk. Common regimens include doses at birth, 6 weeks, and 14 weeks or at birth, 1 month, and 6 months. Adults at high risk require three doses spaced over six months. Vaccination is the most effective method to prevent HBV and consequently HDV infection.

Public Health Implications

The carcinogenic classification of hepatitis D calls for intensified global health action. It stresses the importance of vaccination, safe medical practices, and public education. Enhanced funding and research are needed to reduce the burden of HDV-related liver cancer and improve treatment options.

The silver-backed chevrotain, also known as the two-tone mouse deer, was presumed lost to science for three decades. Its unexpected photographic evidence came from camera traps set in a southern Vietnamese lowland forest. This rediscovery renews hope for many species thought extinct and puts stress on the value of persistent conservation.

Appearance and Habitat

The chevrotain is a small hoofed mammal, about the size of a rabbit. It has a russet head and front legs, silver-grey body and hind legs, and a white grizzled rear. It inhabits dense forests in the Greater Annamites, a biodiversity hotspot spanning Vietnam and Laos. Its secretive nature and remote habitat contributed to its long absence from scientific records.

The advisory service combines real-time data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and satellite observations. About Barbados Threadsnake

The Barbados threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae) is a blind, burrowing snake.
It feeds on termites and ants and lays a single slender egg.
Fully grown, it measures only about 10 centimetres (four inches) long.
  • Its small size allows it to fit comfortably on a coin, making it difficult to detect.
  • The snake has pale yellow dorsal lines and eyes positioned on the sides of its head.
History and Identification

First scientifically identified in 2008 by S. Blair Hedges, a biology professor at Temple University, the snake was previously mistaken for a similar species, the Brahminy blind snake. The discovery came after genetic analysis confirmed it as a new species. Before this, only three specimens were known, held in museums in London and California. The species was named in honour of Hedges’ wife, Carla.

Challenges in Rediscovery

The snake’s cryptic nature and tiny size mean it can easily be overlooked. Scientists can search for hours without spotting one. Recently, after a year of searching, Connor Blades from Barbados’ Ministry of Environment finally found a specimen under a rock in a small forest. The snake’s wriggling made identification difficult even under a microscope. A still image helped confirm its identity.

Ecological Importance and Conservation

The rediscovery is for Barbados’ ecosystem. The threadsnake is an endemic species, meaning it is found only on this island. It plays a role in controlling termite and ant populations. Barbados has lost many endemic species due to habitat destruction, including the Barbados racer and skink. The island has one of the lowest amounts of original forest in the Caribbean. Protecting the threadsnake’s habitat could help conserve other native species and biodiversity.

Covering 96 per cent of the global ocean surface, these events lasted four times longer than historical averages. Scientists warn that such extreme ocean warming may indicate a climate tipping point. This could lead to irreversible damage to marine ecosystems and threaten global marine industries.

About Marine Heat Waves

Marine heat waves are prolonged periods of unusually high ocean temperatures. They occur in various ocean regions and have become more frequent and intense over recent decades. These events disrupt marine ecosystems, affect fisheries, and impact human livelihoods dependent on the sea.

2023 MHWs

In 2023, MHWs reached new extremes in intensity, duration, and geographic extent. The total marine heat wave activity amounted to 53.6 billion °C days square kilometre. This figure exceeds the historical norm by more than three standard deviations since 1982. MHWs lasted four times longer than the average duration recorded over the past 40 years.

Regional Hotspots and Drivers

The North Atlantic, Tropical Eastern Pacific, North Pacific, and Southwest Pacific accounted for 90 per cent of oceanic heating anomalies. The North Atlantic experienced the longest marine heat wave on record, lasting 525 days since mid-2022. The Southwest Pacific event broke records for size and duration. In the Tropical Eastern Pacific, temperature anomalies peaked at 1.63°C during the onset of El Niño. Drivers include increased solar radiation due to reduced cloud cover, weakened winds, and ocean current changes.

MHWs cause coral bleaching, mass migration of marine species, and disruption of food webs. These effects reduce biodiversity and increase mortality rates. Key fisheries, such as the Pacific cod fishery, have declined due to species redistribution. Economic losses have been reported in fisheries and marine industries worldwide. Reduced seafood availability threatens food security and livelihoods in coastal communities.

Emerging Climate Tipping Points

Scientists warn that the intensity and persistence of MHWs may signal an approaching climate tipping point. This could trigger irreversible ecosystem collapse. Coral reefs are particularly vulnerable, with bleaching events pushing them beyond recovery thresholds. The loss of marine biodiversity would have far-reaching consequences for global ecology and human well-being.
